Description
Mailbox is a German-based email and productivity suite, rebranded from Mailbox.org in 2025. Known for its strong focus on privacy, security, and digital sovereignty, Mailbox offers a comprehensive set of tools, including encrypted email, calendar, cloud storage, office apps, and video conferencing, all hosted in Berlin’s eco-friendly data centres.
Mailbox supports PGP encryption for emails, ensuring only the intended recipient can read messages. The service is completely ad-free, does not track user activity, and publishes regular transparency reports. It offers features like disposable email addresses, two-factor authentication, and support for third-party email clients via IMAP/POP.
In 2025, Mailbox received the BSI Gold Status for its security standards. Mailbox publishes transparency reports detailing requests from investigative authorities. Mailbox supports and uses open-source technologies like Open Xchange, but it does not publish its own code as far as I know.
The service has been adopted by educational institutions and public authorities in Germany, though some regions have faced pressure to switch to Microsoft Exchange.
It offers several pricing plans, starting at 1€ per month for 2GB of storage and 2 aliases @mailbox.org.
